Investigating the Thermal Runaway Behaviour of Fresh and Aged Large Prismatic Lithium-Ion Cells in Overtemperature Experiments

When using lithium-ion batteries (LiBs) with nickel-rich cathodes, safety issues such as thermal runaway (TR) propagation must be considered. To design safe LiBs, effective countermeasures against TR developed. For this purpose, knowledge about the behaviour, especially onset temperature, of fresh and aged cells is required. Therefore, aim work to investigate behaviour several different cathode chemistries in overtemperature tests an oven test setup determine changes due cyclisation. investigation large format cells, turns out alternative accelerating rate calorimetry test. Analysing results shows that initial temperature after cyclisation for one cell chemistry significantly decreased failure component. In addition, from a series measured temperatures it can deduced underlying probability distribution should taken into account when designing LiBs.
